On February 17, 2008, Kosovo declared its independence, becoming the last insurgent state after the dissolution of Yugoslavia.
Kosovo's declaration of independence established a secular and multi-ethnic democracy that promotes the rights of all communities.
In April 2008, the Kosovo Assembly approved the country’s constitution, which came into effect in June 2008.

There are 40,000 small and medium-sized enterprises active in Kosovo, about 50% of them being involved in trade and industry.
The number of state-owned companies in PAK's portfolio is 589, where 406 state-owned companies have been partially privatized leading to the sale of 763 new businesses and 523 businesses sold through liquidation.
