On February 17, 2008, Kosovo declared its independence, becoming the last insurgent state after the dissolution of Yugoslavia.
Kosovo's declaration of independence established a secular and multi-ethnic democracy that promotes the rights of all communities.
In April 2008, the Kosovo Assembly approved the country’s constitution, which came into effect in June 2008.
